Conductor: Anthony Halstead
Leader: Jeremy Ovenden

The orchestra was founded in 2002 for a performance in Canterbury Cathedral as part of the Canterbury Festival. The concert, which included performances of Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite, Mozart's Symphony No. 40 and Albinoni's Double Oboe Concerto, was conducted by Nicholas Daniel (international conductor and oboist) and received an enthusiastic reception. Next year will se the Gala Anniversary Concert - celebrating 10 years of the Festival Chamber Orchstra as well as the founding group of the orchestra, 20 years of the Crowther Wind Quintet.

There is a wealth of wonderful chamber music that is rarely performed and as a result, in 2007, the orchestra was brought together once again under conductor Anthony Halstead, a leading figure in the period-instrument movement and renowned natural horn player. (pictured right)

John Harle's name is synonymous with new and innovative musical ideas and projects across many genres. He is known equally for his work as a pioneer saxophonist in the concert hall and for his bold compositions; vividly intermingling the materials of jazz, rock, classical music, electronics and opera.

Michael Chance has established a worldwide reputation as one of the foremost exponents of the male alto voice in all areas of the classical music repertoire and is in equal demand as an opera, concert and recording artist. Michael was a choral scholar at King's College, Cambridge.

The orchestra was invited to perform at last year’s Canterbury Festival in a concert featuring saxophonist John Harle and have been invited back again to play this year as part of their 2011/2012 series.
Other concerts this season include Autumnal Colours, Movie Classics (a Canterbury Festival concert) featuring John Harle on saxophones, Music to Feed the Soul featuring counter tenor Michael Chance and the Gala Anniversary Concert to celebrate The Crowther Wind Quintet's 20th Anniversary. Another forthcoming concert is at the Turner Contemporary in Margate. The performance features Ian Crowther on oboe, accompanied by the Festival Chamber Orchestra performing Sir Wilhelm Herschel’s Oboe Concertos. It is the first time the concerto has been performed in Britain.

The orchestra has many guises, from performing with soloists to choirs. Recently the orchestra has worked with Whitstable Choral Society and The Seventy Choir, giving performances of Bach’s St Matthew Passion and Vaughan Williams’ Sea Symphony. For the last three years, the orchestra has also played for the Garden Opera which takes place in the Dean's garden of Canterbury Cathedral.

The orchestra has just welcomed back a number of members from a performance of The Fairy Queen by Purcell which took place in Lacoste, France as part of the Lacoste Festival. If you would like more information on booking or sponsoring the orchestra, please contact:
